Below is a checklist we’ve created specifically for surgeons to help assess whether your practice has the foundational elements in place and is ready to grow with Specialist Practice Excellence.

This tool will guide you in identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement, ensuring you’re well-prepared to maximise the benefits of our SPE Practice Improvement Program.

SUPPORTERS – You have a Support Team

  • A successful practice depends on a skilled, motivated team, with a reliable Practice Manager to oversee day-to-day operations, staff management, and ensure efficient workflow. Your staff should be well-trained, cohesive, and focused on delivering high-quality patient care.

SPACE- You have your own Office Space

  • Your office environment should be professional, welcoming, and equipped to handle the needs of your practice. Having enough space ensures patient comfort and allows your team to operate efficiently, creating a positive experience for all visitors.

SYSTEMS – You have developed some good Operational Standards and Processes

  • Robust operational systems, including scheduling, billing, and patient management, are essential for running a seamless practice. Consistent processes help to minimise errors, improve patient flow, and ensure smooth day-to-day operations, allowing you to focus on patient care.

SERVICE EXCELLENCE – You are committed to delivering excellent Customer Service

  • Excellent customer service is crucial for retaining patients and generating positive word-of-mouth referrals. Every interaction with patients, from first contact to post-surgical care, should reflect professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to patient satisfaction.

SUSTAINABLE FINANCIALLY – You have a Bookkeeper/Accountant and Funds to Grow

  • Effective financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control, is critical to maintaining profitability and ensuring long-term sustainability. Having a solid financial plan enables the practice to invest in growth, technology, and staff, while staying financially healthy.

STANDARDS – You are committed to High Operating Standards

  • Ensuring that your practice complies with all relevant medical regulations, licensing requirements, and industry standards is crucial. This includes maintaining accreditation with medical boards, staying updated on legal obligations, and ensuring patient safety protocols are followed meticulously.

By scoring each area out of 10, you can better understand how ready your practice is for the next stage of growth.

Add up your score, and you’ll have a Total Score of up to 60. You can also be able to recognise any gaps.
